SuperVision is a continuing professional development process.  It is part of the educational and learning cycle which offers practitioners space and opportunity to grow as practitioners.  The use of a capital V is deliberate: SuperVision enables the supervisee to step back from their work so they can take a meta-perspective, “see” the relationship between them as coach and their coachee from a different place.

Human beings “discount” themselves, other people or the situation – we keep a piece of information out of reach of our conscious awareness and sometimes cannot see the wood for the trees.  Working with a skilled supervisor enables the practitioner to become aware of what they might have been discounting in the coaching relationship, helps them to spot any parallel processes or unhelpful unconscious messages which they, or the coachee may be sending.

Group SuperVision is a supportive way to meet your supervision needs – The Triangle TA Academy Supervision Group is kept deliberately small.  Participants will work one to one with the supervisor in front of the group, who will observe the process and may take part in a process review after the supervision session.  This provides another layer of learning to enrich the day.  Working and learning in a group, if you attend regularly, also offers the benefit of belonging to a professional community of practice, where often strong bonds of friendship develop.  This is very valuable particularly if you work mostly on your own, or are just starting out as a coaching professional.

The European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) requires that all members have regular supervision – and the benefits are outlined above.

Lynda Tongue is a Provisional Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst.  She works with individuals and teams to enhance performance through training, coaching and supervision.  She is Deputy Programme Director – MSc Professional Studies (DTA Coaching).
